Review and Synopsis:
SAD, but the brilliant Moneyball could actually end up the traditional big loser at this years Oscars. Brad Pitts shot at the Best Actor trophy will probably be dwarfed by his buddy George Clooney's The Descendants . Scope in the categories of Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Editing and Sound Mixing seems limited, too. Jonah Hill might also just miss the bus in the Best Supporting Actor category despite a great act.
Notwithstanding six nominations, therefore, Moneyball could actually end up with zero wins.
The fact is ironic because Bennett Millers new film is an admirably- crafted entertainer that regales as a sport movie and impresses as a deep character sketch at the same time.
Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillians screenplay, based on Michael Lewiss book of the same name, narrates the true story of Billy Beane ( Pitt), manager of the struggling Oakland As baseball team. Reeling under losses on the field and faced with next- to- nil allocated budget to re- build his team, Beane faces an uphill task. Thats when he hits upon the brainwave of hiring Yale grad Peter Brand ( Hill). Beane is impressed by Brands statistical approach in picking the right team for specific matches though bosses at the club are cynical about the idea.
The script balances Beanes troubled personal life with the joys of success that the freaky stat- driven experiment brings in its wake. Moneyball is more a film about the strategy of sport than the sport itself and director Miller manages to capture as much with a sharp, witty treatment.
